Joy in serving others.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a butler?

Someone whose whole job was to serve you and your family in all kinds of different ways? No more doing the dishes or putting away toys. No more walking the dog or mowing the lawn. That’d be great, wouldn’t it?

Humans don’t like to serve. Unless it’s serving ourselves, of course. That’s how we’re all born – with a selfish sinful nature in each of our hearts. You see that in an argument that happened between some of Jesus’ followers. Two of them had asked to have places of honor in heaven, and the other ten got upset with them. None of them wanted to serve, just be served. But Jesus was quick to tell them that the life of a Christian was a life of joyful service to God and others.

Why should Christians serve others? How is it possible for Christians to serve others?

Because Jesus served us first, but taking care of way more than just household chores. Jesus went to the cross to take care of our biggest mess – our sin that separated us from God. Since he served us – and continues to serve us – we now look for all the different ways we can serve one another. No butlers needed!

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45

Discussion Starters

  1. Go around the room, asking each person what their least favorite chore is and why.
  2. Brainstorm a few different ways that the members of your family could serve each other.
  3. Discuss some ways you can serve outside your home – like at your church or in your community.
