Fear has a way of entering life quickly.

A scary diagnosis, financial stress, trouble at school, conflict at home, or just general uncertainty about the future can leave hearts young and old feeling scared. Even children can carry fears they don’t always know how to express. In those moments, God gives families a powerful promise: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

A refuge is a place of safety and protection. In ancient times, people ran to strong fortresses when danger came. God says that for his people, he is that safe place.

That means families don’t face trouble alone. The Lord is “ever-present,” which means he is always near. Not sometimes. Not only on good days. He is present in every moment of fear and uncertainty.

That doesn’t mean troubles disappear immediately or entirely though. Psalm 46 later describes mountains falling and the earth shaking. But even when life feels unstable, God remains steady. He strengthens his people with his promises and reminds them that he’s in control.

The best place we see God’s protection is in Jesus. Jesus faced suffering, death, and even abandonment on the cross so that we would never be separated from God’s love. Because Christ lives, our greatest fears have been defeated. Whatever troubles come into our homes, we belong safely to him.

When fear rises in your family, turn together to God’s Word and prayer. Speak his promises out loud. Remind one another where true safety is found.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

Dear heavenly Father, when fears and troubles come into our lives, remind us that you are our refuge and strength. Calm our anxious hearts and help our family trust in your care. Thank you for sending Jesus to save us and to give us peace that nothing can take away. Keep our family close to you each day. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
