Courage to Stand Out

Life’s not always easy.

God gives Christians challenges to conquer and obstacles to overcome. But some of these challenges and obstacles can make us feel afraid or discouraged, especially if they’re particularly tough or push us way out of our comfort zone.

God spoke these words to Joshua as he faced a tall task. Joshua was the leader of God’s people, who were about to cross into the land God had promised would be theirs one day. But the land was already occupied by other people, so the Israelites would have to fight for it. As Joshua contemplated the coming challenge, God appeared to him and said:“The LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Recognize though, that the command to be strong and courageous was not based on Joshua’s abilities, but on God’s promise.

Our courage does not come from being brave on our own either. By ourselves, we are often weak and fearful.

But God strengthens us through Jesus.

Christ faced sin, death, and the devil for us – and he won. Because Jesus lives, we are never alone.

Parents and children alike can stand firm in faith, speak the truth in love, and face every challenge in life knowing that God’s presence and forgiveness go with us every step of the way.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. -Joshua 1:9
