Living generously.

“God loves a cheerful giver.”

That’s what God tells us through the Bible writer Paul. But what does it mean to give cheerfully? Sometimes giving doesn’t feel all that cheerful. Maybe we’re asked to share something we really like, or to give up time we’d rather spend doing something else. At times like that, our hearts don’t always want to give.

But God invites us to see giving differently. He doesn’t want forced or reluctant gifts. He loves when giving flows from a heart that is glad, because that kind of giving reflects him. Think about it: God didn’t give to us grudgingly. He didn’t hold back or hesitate. He gave us his very best – his Son, Jesus – to save us. That is the greatest gift ever given, and it came from a heart full of love!

When we understand how generously God has given to us, it begins to change how we give to others.

We’re not giving to earn God’s love because we already have it. We’re not giving because we have to but because we get to. Whether it’s sharing toys, helping a neighbor, giving an offering at church, or showing kindness – these are all ways we reflect God’s generous heart.

So next time you have a chance to give, pause and remember: God has given you everything you need, and more. Remembering that fills our hearts with joy and that joy is shown in our giving.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7
