How can you make “thank you” more than just a habit?

Parents, what are the top phrases you find yourself repeating to your kids? Kids, what are the top phrases you keep hearing from your parents? I’m sure some phrases made both your lists! “Make your bed.” “Wash your hands.” “Eat your vegetables.” Did the phrase “make sure you say thank you” make either of your lists?

Kids, if you hear that a lot from your parents, know that they aren’t just trying to annoy you. Gratitude – being thankful – is an important virtue for everyday life, and your parents want you to have it. It’s about more than just saying “thank you” when you get a gift. They want you to be grateful for all the blessings you have, no matter how big or small.

Parents, if you’ve been repeating the phrase “make sure you say thank you” until you’re blue in the face, consider this: a lack of gratitude is often due to a lack of understanding, not rudeness or spite. Your four year old doesn’t understand the time and effort it took to make that plate of dinner. Your fourteen year old doesn’t always understand the planning and money that went into the family vacation.

And let’s be honest, all of us – even adults – struggle with gratitude.

We focus too much on the negatives in life. We get caught up trying to keep up with the Joneses. We get distracted by the trivial and often take for granted what’s most important.

But one thing can change all of that – understanding that we’ve been given the greatest gift ever. That all our moments of ingratitude have been paid for by Jesus on the cross. That God freely gives us forgiveness through faith in Christ. That fact grows true gratitude in our hearts. And true gratitude flows into every aspect of life, no matter the circumstances!

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Questions for Kids (and parents too!)

For Younger Kids:

  • What’s something small you’re thankful for today (like your bed, food, or a toy)?
  • What is the greatest gift God has given you? (Hint: his name starts with a “J”)
  • How can you show thankfulness to God and to your family this week?

For Older Kids:

  • How does remembering Christ’s sacrifice on the cross change the way we see everyday blessings?
  • The Bible reading says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” What’s one difficult situation in your life right now where you can practice that kind of gratitude?
  • Parents: How can you teach gratitude a little differently? Kids: How can you show your parents you really are thankful?
