Have you seen those “morning routine” videos on social media?
3 am wake-up times. Face-dunks into ice water. Fourteen ingredient protein shake. While some of those routines seem overly complicated or just plain over-the-top, they point to the fact that life is built around routines and habits. That’s especially true when it comes to family life. We eat meals together, ride in cars together, work, play, and talk together every day. Do you struggle to fit family devotions or spiritual conversations into those daily routines? If so, you’re not alone. It’s difficult to change routines and form new habits with God’s Word, even when we know what we’re trying to include is so important. In fact, our sinful nature tries to team up with the devil to get us to think, “There’s no way we could fit another thing into today!”
Actually though, there is a way – and God is good enough to describe it for us! Your family doesn’t have to spend hours each day digging into God’s Word together – but how great would that be if you could!?
Within each day’s ordinary routines there are extraordinary opportunities to be in God’s Word and live out God’s love as a family.
A question about faith on the ride to school. A family prayer at the dinner table. A Bible story before bedtime. These are some little things we can incorporate into our existing routines that seem small but can have massive and lasting results for our family. Try to incorporate one small thing this week and see how God uses it to bless your family!
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Questions for Kiddos (and parents too!)
For Younger Kids: Would you rather hear a Bible story on the way to school, at the dinner table, or at bedtime? Why?
For Older Kids/Adults: Think about your daily routine — where could God’s Word naturally fit in without feeling like “one more thing” to do? What’s one small spiritual action you could start including in your daily routines? (Example: download a “verse-a-day” Bible app and read it while you eat breakfast.)
